Elvis Opens Overton's Late Night Shopping

Elvis sings to the crowds at the Community Centre Overton's annual late night shopping and grand lighting up of the Christmas tree took place on December 2nd. The Community Centre square saw well-wrapped crowds gathering early in anticipation of the arrival of the 'special guest' and at 6.30, a Cadillac (just less than a hockey pitch in size) pulled up and Elvis emerged to a rapturous reception. Having performed the lighting up ceremony, Elvis sang a couple of suitably Christmas-y numbers and posed for photos before departing to prepare for his later gig at the 'Stute.

Santa Claus was once again in residence in the HSBC bank. Laverstoke Park ran a spit roast and music came courtesy of a festive barrel organ and ODS carol singers.

Elvis in full swing at the Stute Shops were open until 9.00 and many had the added attraction of a glass of wine or other festive fayre for visitors. Karen Fletcher of the Overton Business Association, who co-ordinated the event, thanked those who had contributed, including the Parish Council for the tree lights, the Dramatic Society for staging the ceremony the Co-op for providing the presents for Santa to give out.

Clothing Collection Caution

Some residents have expressed concern that a clothing collection, advertised by a leaflet drop in the village this week, may not be exactly what it appears to be. The leaflet, supposedly distributed on behalf of 'Ecotex Collection Ltd', suggests that any clothing donated will benefit people in the third world and asks that bags be left out for collection on Friday.

Similar collections were the subject of a television report recently, in which the donated clothing was actually sold for profit and did not benefit any charitable cause. We should point out that this may not be illegal, as the leaflets give no mention of 'charity' and actually state that "Ecotex Collection Ltd is a commercial organisation not a charity". However, we have been unable to find any record of Ecotex Collection Ltd on the Companies House website and the Company Registration number given was actually that of Eco Central Ltd, which was dissolved in April 2004.

We would stress that this may not be an illegal practice, but you should be aware of these details before deciding if you wish to make a donation.

End of the Flower Towers?

Following some criticism that the flower towers were not in full bloom in time for the Sheepfair in July, the Parish Council has decided not to provide funding for future towers.

The towers, which first appeared at the Millennium Sheepfair, have stood at each side of the north end of Winchester Street each year since. The towers themselves were originally bought by the Millennium Sheepfair committee and each subsequent year the cost of the display (this year an approximate £700) has been borne by the Parish Council. A complaint that the towers were not fully ready for this year's Sheepfair persuaded councillors at the August meeting that this should be the last time.

What do you think?
Are the flower towers an asset to the centre of the village and another example of what makes Overton that little bit special, or are they just an all-too-temporary waste of money?

Sheep Fair - Thousands Flock to Village

While all eyes had watched as the week's weather forecasts offered little chance on anything other than "cloud & scattered showers" the sun really shone on the Victorian Sheep Fair's opening day.

This year's Sheep Fair took place in Winchester St. between the junction with the High St and Greyhound Lane. The street was packed with stalls and street entertainers and there was a carnival parade on Sunday afternoon. ODS performed "A Right Victorian Knees Up" in St Mary's Hall during the three nights leading up to the Fair and the event closed on Sunday night.
