The 2008 Overton Regency Sheepfair got off to spectacular start as a packed Winchester Street was treated to the
grand opening off the eagerly awaited weekend of fun & festivities. Bathed in much welsome sunshine, Basingstoke and
Deane Mayor, George Hood, gave an opening address to the gathered throng, resplendant in period costumes.
Sir Jonathan Portal, accompanied by his wife, Lady Louisa, then 'took the crowd back to 1798', relating how the
Regency Overton would have looked, who prime local characters were and introduced his special guest to officially
open the event. 'Jane Austen', attended by her companion 'Thomas Lefroy' (bearing just a very slight resemblance
to Jenna Clark and Ian Williams) arrived by pony & trap and then gave a brief opening address and declared the
Sheepfair well and truly open. With that, the festivities were under way and the Hook Eagle Morris Men took to the street.
